Mental Health Week

2020-05-08

One quote that has always stuck with me when it came to mental health was “We might not all have mental illness, but we all have mental health.” I first heard at a Jack.org national summit that I had the privilege to attend. I wish I could remember which of the keynote speakers said this (if I had to guess, I would imagine it was Jack.org’s founder, Eric Windeler), but it stuck with me.

The speaker was right.

Like physical health, each and every one of us has mental health. Some of us have excellent mental health. Maybe we meditate most days, we tell ourselves positive affirmations, and we have good coping mechanisms when it comes to stress. For others, we might experience negative self-talk, we might overthink things that are beyond our control, and maybe we suffer from mental illness.

Mental health week isn’t only about smashing the stigma that goes with having a mental illness. Of course, that is part of it, but it’s also a reminder that like caring for our physical bodies, we must also take care to look after our mental health.

These two often go hand in hand. One of the best things you can do for your mental health is to go outside, and also to exercise regularly, both of which are beneficial for our physical bodies as well.

Going outside during this pandemic can be stressful or for some, impossible. If you’re someone fortunate enough to have a backyard or an outdoor patio, try spending at least 30 minutes each day outdoors. If you have somewhere nearby you can go for a walk, do so. Also make sure to get 30 minutes of physical activity in each day. It doesn’t seem like much, and honestly, if I can find the time, you can too.

Lastly, one of the best tips I can offer to look after your mental health during this unprecedented time is to keep a regular routine each day, and to fit mindfulness and meditation somewhere into that daily routine. It will make a world of difference to your mental health.

With love,
